The Story of Baby Brandi: A Journey of Resilience and Heartbreak

On July 10, 2021, an urgent call came to a local wildlife rescue center regarding a monkey that had fallen from a height. Despite a swift response, the monkey, named Bridget, succumbed to life-threatening injuries on the scene. Witnesses reported that Bridget's baby, Brandi, had also fallen and may have sustained injuries. The center quickly brought Brandi in for a 48-hour observation.

Upon arrival, Brandi was found in distress, unable to sit properly, showing little appetite, and crying out for her mother. After some coaxing, staff managed to get her to drink a small amount of milk and eat a few lotus seeds. A thorough evaluation was planned by the staff veterinarian, who hoped for the best.

By July 16, the center announced Brandi's release, noting her appetite had improved and a veterinary check confirmed she had no internal injuries or broken bones. Brandi was returned to her troop, with hopes that her Great Grandma Theresa and Grandma Brianna would care for her. Upon arriving at Bayon Temple, Brandi immediately recognized her home, eagerly bolting from the cage to find her family. A warm reunion with Grandma Theresa and Auntie Cara filled the staff with hope for her future, even as they mourned the loss of her mother.

However, on August 17, tragedy struck again when Brandi was rescued for a second time, this time with injuries to her private area and right leg. After undergoing surgery and months of rehabilitation, she was deemed ready for release alongside two other primates, Ale and Torres. On November 21, Brandi was joyfully accepted back by her family, although Ale faced rejection from her mother, prompting her return to the shelter.

The heartbreak continued on November 30 when the center received another distress call about a primate hit by a car. Tragically, it was Brandi, found barely moving and lodged in a tree. Witnesses noted that her Grandmother Brianna had carried her there after the accident. Despite immediate efforts to save her, Brandi's condition was critical, and she passed away that night.

Brandi's journey serves as a poignant reminder of life's fragility, particularly for a young monkey who faced so much in her short life. The center honors her memory and expresses gratitude for the support received during her time with them. Rest in peace, sweet Brandi; you will be deeply missed.
